Preflighting is the process of inspecting digital PDF files before sending them to high-speed commercial printing presses. Reviewing your manuscript interior and cover artwork against these 5 technical checkpoints ensures your books print with crisp typography, sharp imagery, and perfect trim margins.
The 5 Most Common Prepress Errors
1. Low Image Resolution (Under 300 DPI)
Images downloaded from websites or social media are typically 72 DPI, which results in pixelated, blurry prints. Ensure all photos and graphics are high-resolution (300 DPI at 100% scale).
2. Missing 0.125" Bleed Margins
If images or color backgrounds touch the page edge, you must extend the background 0.125 in (3.175 mm) beyond the trim line to avoid thin white slivers after blade trimming.
3. RGB vs. CMYK Color Space Shift
Digital screens display colors in RGB (Red, Green, Blue), whereas commercial printing presses use CMYK ink (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). Convert your PDF color profile to CMYK (SWOP/GRACoL) before exporting.
4. Un-Embedded Custom Fonts
If custom fonts are not embedded into the PDF file, the RIP (Raster Image Processor) software may substitute standard fonts, altering your page typography. Always select "Embed All Fonts" when exporting.
5. Incorrect Cover Spine Width
Cover PDFs must be submitted as a single spread (Back Cover + Spine + Front Cover). Calculate your exact spine width based on page count and paper caliper before exporting cover art.
